Carvoeiro is a picturesque fishing village in Portugal's western Algarve with a history dating back centuries. Here you'll find a compact town center with two main roads leading to the square, white buildings set into the cliff, a lighthouse, and the remains of a 17th-century fort. There are plenty of sandy beaches to choose from, including one in the middle of town, and Praia do Paraiso, a sandy bay sheltered by dramatic cliffs. You can also take a 20-minute drive to the pretty town of Silves, where you can take a leisurely walk along the river, past the orange and lemon trees, or wander up the hill to the cathedral and Moorish castle.
