Our guide to the weather and climate in Sardinia

Sardinia is a beautiful Italian island that exudes culture and history, pristine beaches, and fabulous food. The second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, it is a place that is often overlooked by British holidaymakers and is something of an undiscovered gem. The climate is typical of the Mediterranean islands, with hot summers and mild winters meaning you can visit any month of the year.

In January you'll find low-priced accommodation, few crowds, and a relaxed atmosphere that pervades the whole island. Temperatures are typically 5 to 10°c warmer than those of the UK.

A beach day is probably out of the question, but you could take a walk along the sand or even spend an hour here with a blanket and a good book. Although we’re pretty sure if you’re planning a holiday this month, the beach isn’t at the top of your list.

Luckily, Sardinia is not just about glorious sands and blue waters – if you’re hoping to immerse yourself in the ancient history of the island, then look no further than the capital, Cagliari

If you are not staying in the capital and just visiting for one day, then there are a few things you won’t want to miss – the National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari, markets, and the Santa Maria Cathedral are just a few sites that will quench your thirst for culture.

If you’re looking for a little bit more while you’re in Cagliari, then you won’t have to go far to get it – Castello holds wonders such as palaces, domes, 2 watchtowers, and charming alleys that the aristocrats used to adorn. A stunning place that you could spend all day exploring, and without the heat and the crowds, January is certainly an ideal month.

Take into consideration that you’ll most likely see some rain during your stay, and even snow if you venture to the mountainous regions. Five hours of sun per day and mild temperatures will make for a pleasant break though.

The climate in February is similar to that of January, with 15°c high and 7° lows. Again, the beach won’t be high on your list and the sea will be too cold for a swim at 14°.

Pack your case sensibly and expect some showers here and there. You’ll notice the wind is more present this month too, but it shouldn’t stop you from getting out to discover this beautiful island.

Festivals are popular in February and with the temperatures not being so hot, you are able to enjoy the outdoors comfortably.

This time is perfect for hiking too, again the temperatures will ensure you’re not going to get sunburnt or heatstroke and the views from some of the trails will be stunning, especially if you catch a glimpse of snow on the mountains.

Keep in mind that not all facilities will be open and there may still be limited opening hours at some restaurants, but with all that exercise we’re sure you’ll work up an appetite and be keen to sample some of the Sardinian cuisine.

The seasons will soon be changing, as Spring is not far away.

The average temperature rises to 12°c as does the daily high to 16°, and while it may only be by one degree over February, you’ll also get an extra hour of sun too.

The sea remains cold at 14° and rain is forecast for 14 days out of the whole month, so be prepared to change your plans, bring your waterproofs, and don’t expect any long beach days.

Heading outdoors, you could visit Bosa, a charming village on the island. Although it is not as popular as other places that Sardinia has to offer, it is worth putting on your list of places to go. Full of cobbled streets to stroll around with colourful buildings and breathtaking scenery.

You’ll also notice here, that as small as it is, there are quite a few churches, beautiful ones at that. As well as Malaspina Castle and museums to wander round if it does decide to rain, you’ll be able to enjoy a meal at one of the eateries dotted around, so you can make this a full day out with everything you need.

If you want a holiday where you can enjoy sightseeing without the crowds, then travel in March. Prices will still be low, and you’ll get the chance to see the island in all its beauty.

Over the coming months, Sardinia will see an influx in tourists so if you’d prefer to holiday when it is quieter, then April will be ideal for you.

The Spring sunshine takes effect, and highs of 18°c mean the opportunities for outside activities are greater. You still might experience some rain because it is forecast for 13 days of the month, but this shouldn’t hamper your plans too much.

You may even enjoy a few hours on the beach, although keep in mind that temperatures can go to lows of 9°, with averages of 14°.

Costa Rei on the southeast coast is stunning, offering turquoise waters, soft sand, and scenery stretching far into the distance. The sea will still be cold at 15°, but as services start to open, it could be a lovely opportunity to hire a boat and experience the beach and its surroundings from a different viewpoint. However you choose to spend it though, this place will no doubt leave you in awe of such an incredible island.

Located in the south, why not head to Nora – where you will find a plethora of archaeological sites that can be explored. These include the Roman theatre, mosaics, temples, and Roman streets. You’ll be spoilt for choice, and this is a treat for ancient history lovers.

May sees great changes across the island, and is considered by many as the very start of the summer season. Nine hours of sunshine and highs of 22° will no doubt tempt you to the beach, and with the average temperature at 17°, a full day is surely possible.

Le Pelosa Beach is beautiful at any time of the year, but if this is your first time in Sardinia, it’s certainly one you’ll want to visit. The white sand and clear waters are extremely inviting, with the sea warming up to 17° now, you may even be tempted to take a quick dip. The beach is well equipped with amenities and facilities to hire.

The wind that can be present at times makes it perfect for trying your hand at some water sports and when the waves are gentler, don’t miss the opportunity for snorkelling.

With only 9 days of rain throughout the month, there is more chance of sightseeing in May. If you are an avid hiker or just love being outdoors, you really should venture up to Sardinia’s highest point – Punta La Marmora. Admittedly, it isn’t for the faint-hearted and you’ll need to wear a good pair of boots and bear in mind that it may become cooler the higher you go. But it is worth it – for the panoramic views, the surroundings, the wildlife, and nature – it will be an unforgettable adventure.

The climate just keeps on improving through June – 21°c averages, 26° highs and 16° lows make this a terrific month to travel to the island.

Ten hours of sun is music to the ears of those who love nothing more than to work on their tan. You’ll be pleased to know that June is one of the least windy months too so you shouldn’t need anything too heavy in terms of clothing.

Rain is forecast for 6 days out of the entire month, so you probably won’t experience it while you’re away. But if you do, it won’t be enough to hinder your plans and you’ll soon dry off in the sunshine.

If you’re looking for a piece of paradise, then we’d suggest heading to Cala Luna Beach – take note that you can only access it by boat or hiking there – but it is worth it. Located on the east coast, you’ll be met with golden sand and turquoise waters. The sea will be an inviting 20° and compared to previous months there will be more tourists relaxing on the sand and enjoying the waves. Lush greenery and rocky coves surround you to give you a wonderful backdrop and the caves will provide some shade as there are no umbrellas for hire, likewise with sun loungers and it would be wise to bring your own provisions as amenities are sparse and no doubt overpriced.

The effort you put in to visiting Cala Luna will be utterly worth it. Head out after breakfast to make the most of your day.

Accommodation prices across the island will have already increased and you’ll need to book early because June will see a surge in visitors thanks to some splendid weather.

July is undoubtedly one of the best months to experience some glorious Sardinian weather. With only 2 days of rain, it’s pretty much non-existent. Your suitcase will consist of swimwear, t-shirts, shorts, and dresses, as well as high factor suncream.

The days will be filled with 24°c averages and highs will reach 29°. Although we long for the sun, sometimes it can get a little much and if this is the case then why not spend the day in Alghero – here you can walk through the enchanting streets, enjoy the many cafés dotted around, stroll around the shops, and for something truly magnificent you could head to Neptune’s Grotto which is a cave that you can explore with a tour guide, ideal during the hottest part of the day.

If you are a sun worshipper and have been waiting all year to get on the beach, then you’re in luck – Sardinia is home to some of the most beautiful. Staying in Alghero, you will find Maria Pia Beach with its white sand and clear waters. It is an ideal spot for families with children of all ages. Younger ones will enjoy the shallow waters and soft sand, while older ones can take part in beach games and water sports. The sea is a tempting 23° and there are plenty of facilities available and nearby restaurants to refuel during the day.

Twelve hours of sunshine and a gentle breeze will make for the idyllic setting of a sun-filled getaway in July.

Just when you thought Sardinia couldn’t get any hotter – August proves us wrong! High temperatures of 30°c make this the hottest month and another extremely busy one.

Rain is forecast 5 days out of the 31, but any showers will be short-lived and probably give you chance to cool off. With 10 hours of sun throughout the day we’re sure it won’t spoil your plans.

The beaches will be packed with some wanting to achieve the ultimate tan, while others try to cool off in the 25° waters. If you prefer it a little quieter, visit Cala Goloritzé, a much more secluded part of the island with white sand, clear waters, and gorgeous scenery. Take note that there aren’t any facilities and it can be quite tricky to reach, but if you make the effort you’ll have a touch of paradise at your fingertips.

Archaeological sites are always a great way to spend your day and with weather as good as this, you’ll no doubt want to spend a lot of it outdoors. Barumini in the south gives you the opportunity to do just that where you can discover historic culture within the museums, castles, and churches that adorn this exquisite place.

Accommodation and flight prices will be at their peak now, so if you’re looking for a budget holiday this probably isn’t the month for you, however if August is the only month that you can travel then be sure to book in advance to take advantage of any deals on offer and to avoid disappointment.

The good weather continues throughout September, although the temperatures do begin to decrease a little as the month progresses.

You’ll see 8 hours of sun per day which gives you plenty of time to fit everything in. With temperatures ranging from 22 to 26°c there are opportunities for a beach day, sightseeing, tasting the local cuisine, exploring, and everything else in between!

So, let’s hit the beach – Chia in particular should be on your list – famous for its crystal-clear waters and beautifully coloured sand, you’ll be able to relax here and take in the scenery. We must mention the lagoon that is not far away too where you can spot flamingos and dolphins, as well as other wildlife – bring your camera for some unforgettable shots.

You’ll be able to feel the wind on this beach, but that only adds to the fact that it is the perfect spot for water sports.

When you’ve had enough of the beach, why not explore Chia town. Here you’ll be able to stroll around the charming streets, enjoy the galleries and architecture, and if that’s not enough, there are opportunities for horse riding, cycle hire, and a round of golf, just to name a few. A little hidden gem that has grown in popularity and for very good reason.

With nighttime temperatures in the early 20’s it is a good time to marvel at the sunset, enjoy a candlelit meal, or just relax on your balcony after a day of adventure. With only 8 days of rain forecast too, you're unlikely to catch anything more than a light shower. September really is a fabulous month to travel to the island.

Sardinia quietens down from October as families go back to everyday life. If you’re hoping for a getaway that isn’t too crowded, but you still enjoy the warmer climate, travelling this month is perfect.

Average temperatures of 18°c means it is a little cooler, though highs of 22° are possible and will give you the opportunity to spend  time outdoors. Just keep in mind that rain is forecast for 11 days over the entire month and with the number of hours of sunshine dropping to 6, you may have less time to fit everything in to one day.

Porto Flavia must be on your list to visit when planning your trip to Sardinia. A unique mine that was built on a cliff edge and can be seen from the sea, as well as on dry land where you can take a guided tour inside. An ideal place to visit on a cloudy day, but equally as good during the summer months when you need respite from the heat.

Spending every waking minute outdoors may be on your itinerary and luckily the weather is still warm enough for some time at the beach. The sea temperature at 21° means you can expect to enjoy water sports, snorkelling, paddling, and swimming.

Cala Brandinchi Beach is another beautiful spot and visiting in October means it won’t be as crowded as the summer months. You’ll be able to relax on the white sand or enjoy the shallow waters. The views are incredible and you shouldn’t feel much wind here, even at this time of year.

As Sardinia prepares for winter, so do the locals. Many facilities will have shorter opening hours, and some will even close completely. Bear this in mind when booking your holiday – we can imagine though, if you’re travelling in November, it will be to unwind and not do too much.

The temperatures will fall considerably this month and you’ll need to pack some warmer clothes, especially for the nighttime. Highs of 15°c and averages of 11° will make beach visits short, if at all.

It would be a great time to hire a car to go beach hopping – drive to some of the most idyllic spots and view the island when there are less crowds, stroll along the sands, let the waves lap over your feet (this will be enough now the sea temperature is at 15°), and delight in some spectacular sunsets.

Tourists who appreciate culture and archaeology should take a trip to Fordongianus located in central Sardinia. Here you can witness some glorious surrounding landscape, historical ruins, churches, and thermal springs.

With up to 5 hours of sun per day and rain more likely, this season is not for everyone. If your holiday is all about seeing some breathtaking sights, along with relaxation then November is perfect.

The final month of the year and you’ll find that this is one of the wettest and coldest months on the island, however, if you wrap up warm and are braced for changing weather conditions, December is actually a very magical time to visit Sardinia.

You’ll only get 4 hours of sun per day now so your time for doing things will become limited, though this doesn’t mean there aren’t any benefits to travelling to the island this month – many tourists enjoy nothing more than to witness the twinkling display of lights that are on show for the festive period.

The streets and towns will be adorned with Christmas decorations and lights and as the sun sets the island will come alive with charm and elegance. Festivities will be aplenty and you’ll see how the locals enjoy the holidays as they partake in Sardinian traditions and celebrations.

During the day though, you can expect a laid-back approach to the island as a lot of businesses may be closed so they can enjoy their break before starting again in the new year.

The beach and sea will be too cool to spend any such time there, but thankfully the island has a lot more to offer than just sand! If you head up to the mountainous regions you could have a go at skiing. Places such as Bruncu Spina offer all kinds of activities for beginners to the most experienced skier.

December, though a lot colder than the likes of July and August, still offers some of the most unforgettable sights and experiences. Team that with a much milder climate than the UK and affordable deals on your accommodation, we don’t think it will take much persuading to visit this month.

See our full analysis of the Sardinia weather during December

Sardinia offers so much all year round that you may decide you want to visit more than once during the year – we really wouldn’t blame you!

If you’d like to experience the heat and endless days of sunshine, then we’d recommend travelling during the peak months of June to September.

Those who like the warmth but not the crowds so much, will do well in the shoulder seasons of April, May, and October which will give you some lovely weather.

Maybe you just need some rest and relaxation, not involving the beach, then January or December would be ideal.

Whichever month you choose, there will be a new experience waiting for you and whether it’s one week, two or even three that you take your holiday for, your trip will be unforgettable.
