The largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily is a region in Italy that is popular for its dry summers and mild winters, architecture, cuisine, beaches, and scenery.

January brings a lot of lows – low prices, low crowds, and low temperatures. So, if you’re hoping to have a winter break with a hot climate, Sicily is not the place for you. But if you don’t mind the unpredictable weather and are just looking for a change of scenery, it’s still a beautiful place to visit.

High temperatures of 11°c and lows of 5° mean you will need your jumpers and warmer clothes. The beach will not be at the top of your list of things to do this month, the sea will be cold at 16°, and in all honesty you really won’t get much in the way of restaurants or bars near the beach because there simply isn’t enough of a crowd to draw in.

Towns are extremely quiet and you’ll find most tours and venues are closed. If you want to maximise your options, then it is worth staying in a city such as Palermo or Siracusa where more things are available.

You could go sightseeing in January – you get the benefit of fewer crowds meaning you will be able to take photos and admire the views. Head to Segesta where you can see a wide variety of archaeological sites that are truly impressive.

Just take note that this month is not filled with sunshine, instead it can be wet and cold at times, but the sightseeing experience of Sicily is one not to be missed.

The climate remains mild with highs of 12°c and low of 5°. There will be between 14 and 17 days of rain during February and the sea temperature will remain at 15° so it will be too cold for swimming as well as beach days being pretty much out of the question.

Winds will be present as light breezes, and these can feel quite cold as they blow.

If you want to spend some time outdoors, then why not enjoy some historical sightseeing – visit the Temple of Concordia in the south. Thanks to the outstanding preservation you can see this columned monument in all its glory.

Preferring to stay indoors, you could visit the village of Salemi in the west of Sicily which is home to a variety of museums such as the Museum of Sacred Art and the Mafia Museum – perfect for when the weather takes a turn.

Average temperatures of 8° and 5 hours of sunlight per day makes the February climate a lot more appealing than back in the UK.

Temperatures rise by 1° this month which gives the island 13° highs and lower temperatures of 6°c, making the evenings rather cool.

With around 14 days of rain forecast over the month you may still see some showers and you probably won’t want to visit the beach for any long periods of time. However, taking a walk along the sand could be relaxing after a meal.

Isola Bella Beach in Messina is magnificent. Admire the clear blue waters and flourishing islet. While you won’t be able to go swimming with the sea being a chilly 15°, it is a lovely place to marvel at without tourists blocking every view. Come back in the summer months if you want to enjoy the pebbled beach and calm waters.

Although spring is on the horizon, the climate can still be a little temperamental but if you’ve braced yourself for this there are many attractive qualities to taking your holiday in March.

The Greek Temples of Selinunte are exquisite, showcasing ruins of a once bustling city. If you want to spend a good amount of time here, then taking a walk through the archaeological park will have you in awe of the incredible monuments it holds.

This month is ideal for such activities thanks to the cooler temperatures allowing you to take long walks without the risk of overheating or sunburn.

The climate climbs a little further in April as we see spring unfold and you’ll be met with pleasant 15° highs.

This month typically brings the excitement of Easter so if you’re travelling through the school break, you and your family will get chance to witness extravagant parades and traditions.

You may see some rain during your stay – it will only be short showers but it’s worth noting that 13 days are forecast throughout the month. Enough about the rain though, with 7-8 hours of sun per day we’re sure you’ll be keen to spend your time outdoors.

Hoping to spend a couple of hours at the beach, head to Sovareto which offers fine sand, clear and calm waters, and lush green scenery. Some tourists might be tempted by the sea, but at 16°c it’s probably still too cold for most.

Making the most of your day, why not visit the nearby town of Sciacca – a historic fishing village that has thermal spas, Piazza Scantaliato, castle remains, and a fishing harbour. Bear in mind that there are different levels and hills to walk to discover this town, so you’ll need a good pair of shoes. There are eateries dotted around and you’ll get a feel for authentic Sicilian life.

Pack the PJs Sicily in April is 'pleasant'. Some days are t-shirt weather, others there's a chilly breeze off the sea. Unheated outdoor pools are very (very) cold, but overall it is nice weather to sit outside cafes etc. Pack the PJs

San Leone Beach is a stunning stretch of golden sand that ensures you’ll find space to relax or venture into the blue waters. Gentle breezes are present in May but with 8-9 hours of sunshine per day, you probably won’t mind this.

The town of San Leone is a lovely place to visit if you wish to stretch your legs – walk along the promenade, visit the amusement parks, or enjoy some of the exciting nightlife. Whether you want to relax with a good book or party the night away – May is certainly a good time to experience it all.

Rainfall is a possibility during this month, though showers won’t last long and will only happen for 8 days over the 31 so it shouldn’t cause too much disruption to your plans.

Travelling to Sicily in June is an absolute delight with summer just around the corner. From now the island begins to see more tourists and with good reason – high temperatures of 23°c and averages of 19° mean it’s perfect outdoor weather.

You’ll need your suncream and will want to pack your t-shirt and shorts, and while the climate will be warm to hot, it won’t be too uncomfortable for hitting the beach or sightseeing.

If you’re an avid hiker, there should be one challenge you’re keen to conquer – Mount Etna. Whether you want to tackle it independently or with a guide, this rewarding mission will be worth it. You’ll need a full day for this and a well-earned beverage afterwards, but what an achievement it would be to hike one of Europe’s most active volcanoes!

The dry spell continues, and July is one of the busiest times for Sicily. With 10 hours of uninterrupted sunshine, blue skies, and glorious days we can see why. Temperatures are in their 20’s during the day and 17°c makes the evenings comfortable.

Beaches will be bustling with families now that school holidays are upon us. Visit one of the Cefalù beaches on the northern coast where you’ll get shallow and calm waters – with the sea now at 25° it is ideal for young children.

Water sports are available at all beaches and there will be a lot of tourists enjoying the blue waters while the sun is hot. And for those who want to relax, you can enjoy the soft sand and work on your tan.

Head into Cefalù where you can wander round the Museo Mandralisea or Lavatolo Medievale. Visit before the sun gets too hot and you can hike up La Rocca for some amazing views.

Travelling in peak season can be hectic, but if it is the only time that you can travel and you prefer things a little more sedate, you’ll be pleased to know that Le Solette Beach in Menfi (on the southeast coast) is much quieter. With its golden sand and clear waters, it is an idyllic oasis away from the crowds.

Thanks to the long days in July, you could hire a car and go beach hopping in search of the more peaceful points and hidden gems of Sicily.

If you do fancy a change throughout the day, the 9 hours of sunshine will allow you to explore the town of Balestrate where you can stroll around the shops, cafés, and gelato stalls, along with the churches, Roman bridge remains, and a stunning backdrop of olive groves and vineyards.

Prices will inevitably be higher this month and you’ll want to book in advance. For your money though, you will get outstanding weather, picture perfect surroundings, and some unforgettable memories.

The September climate shifts slightly, but not by much and mainly towards the last 2 weeks of the month when you may see the odd shower because rain is predicted for 11 days out of the 30.

There will be 24° highs and averages of 20°c so it is still worthy of a visit before the end of summer. The sun will shine for 7 hours per day and with crowds starting to disperse, you can enjoy the climate at a more relaxed pace.

Don’t be fooled though, the beaches will still be pretty busy thanks to the long, dry days. Lascari Beach offers white sand and clear waters, as well as its lush greenery and nature resulting in a relaxing atmosphere to soak up the sun.

The sea is still warm at 24° and there are opportunities for swimming and snorkelling.

Why not head to the capital of Sicily – Palermo. A city full of life that offers history, architecture, boutiques, and eateries. The city is not overly used by tourists, although we’d recommend spending a day or two here, especially if you’re keen on learning about the history of Sicily.

While most of us are digging out our clothes ready for the colder climate, Sicily in October is a pleasant contrast. High temperatures of 20°c mean you’ll be able to enjoy t-shirt and shorts weather for a little longer and although it may feel chilly in the evenings, the days more than make up for it.

Even with averages at 17°, it will still be warm enough to spend a few hours at the beach and the sea at 22° means you will get a great holiday with less crowds and some lovely weather.

Bear in mind that you may experience some rain now Sicily is nearing the winter months and the hours of sun per day reduce to 6, but there’s still plenty to do and most activities and facilities remain open.

If you want to make the most of your time outdoors, we’d suggest visiting Torre Salsa Nature Reserve located in the south – this place really will give you ultimate solitude. Nestled amongst the cliffs, fields, and hills is Torre Salsa Beach. An impressive span of golden sand and crystal-clear waters. There aren’t any facilities here, but if you come prepared you will enjoy sunbathing, snorkelling, swimming, and discover some native wildlife on the many hiking trails.

If you like to try new cuisine then you’ll be pleased to know that the autumn season brings with it some delectable food festivals, as well as restaurants providing meals with the freshest ingredients of the season to really inspire your tastebuds!

At the end of the year you’d expect to see the wintry conditions and Sicily is no exception. Although we think you’d agree that with high temperatures of 13°c and averages of 10°, it is a milder climate than the UK and with low prices on your accommodation and flight, December is a wonderful time to travel.

It will be chilly during the evening with lows of 6° and the days will feel shorter with only 4 hours of sun, but thankfully there are still plenty of things to see and do this month.

Now we have already mentioned Mount Etna, but it is worth a trip during December because you may get to see some amazing views of the snowy peaks – just make sure to take your waterproofs and warmer clothes.

The sea temperature will now be 17° and this may be warm enough for some to take a quick dip, but if you’d rather swim in warmer water, we’d suggest finding accommodation with a pool on site.

The beach may be too cold for anything other than a walk – Pollina Beach along the north coast is an idyllic setting that offers golden sand, blue waters, and lush mountainous landscape.

The highlight of visiting Sicily in December has to be the festivities and ambience that Christmas brings. The island exudes joy and this shines through the lights and decorations that adorn the streets and towns, as well as carol singing, live nativity scenes, and locals coming together to celebrate.

If you are spending this season away from home, Sicily is a magical place to experience.
